(NewsNation) — Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, a one-time presidential candidate, has announced he is running for DNC chair.
“I’m running to fix the problem,” O’Malley said on NewsNation’s “The Hill.” “We can. There’s always a light at the end of darkness, and this party needs to figure out what we did well, what we did poorly, where we lost connection, and how we can reestablish it. … in order to win back our country.”

O’Malley was the commissioner of the Social Security Administration until stepping down Tuesday.
“I support things that allow us to be a beacon of hope for the world,” O’Malley said when asked if he supports a border wall. “I’ve never particularly thought that the border wall was anything more than a campaign symbol. I think there are other ways that you can secure a border.”
“The enduring symbol of our country should not be barbed wire fences. … It needs to be the Statue of Liberty,” O’Malley added.

Minnesota Democratic Chair Ken Martin has also declared he’s running for chair of the Democratic National Committee. And a source familiar with his thinking tells NewsNation that Wisconsin Democratic Chair Ben Wikler is also seriously considering entering the race.
The new chair is expected to be chosen by DNC members — approximately 450 — early next year.
