Donald Trump projected to win Nevada

(NewsNation) —  Donald Trump is projected to win Nevada, taking 6 electoral votes in a state that has been deemed a bellwether for presidential elections, according to NewsNation/Decision Decision Desk HQ. See the results of the presidential election in other states here.

Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump had been neck and neck in key battleground states, including Nevada, leading up to the election, according to polling by NewsNation partner The Hill.

Republicans dominated the state from the late 1960s through the late 1980s, but the growing number and diversity of people coming into Nevada has made it a battleground state.

Since 1900, the winner of Nevada has gone on to win the presidency in 27 of the last 30 elections, according to the Chicago Tribune.

However, former Democratic Secretary of State Hillary Clinton beat Trump 48% to 46% in the 2016 election, though she lost the overall election.

In 2020, Biden won Nevada by about 2.5%. 

The state stands apart from the others due to its unique service sector-oriented population and a large number of Latino voters.

Trump campaigned in the state seeking to garner votes in the Las Vegas area by pledging to end taxes on tips. 

Harris also backed that policy but additionally urged the state to raise the minimum wage.

An October survey from Emerson College Polling and The Hill showed the economy was the top issue for a third of Nevada voters. After the economy, voters were most concerned with housing affordability, immigration and threats to democracy. 

While the economy and inflation have been top-of-mind issues for voters across the swing states, the issue was particularly important in Nevada, where the COVID-19 pandemic hurt its service sector-oriented economy.

Nevada had an unemployment rate of 5.6% in September, and that percentage was higher at 6.1% in the Las Vegas area in August, according to the most recent Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Meanwhile, the national unemployment rate sat at 4.1% in September.
