US Senate race in Nevada

In addition to casting ballots in the race for the White House between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, Nevada voters will decide on a U.S. Senate race and a list of ballot initiatives.

Democratic Sen. Jacky Rosen will seek re-election against Republican challenger Sam Brown.

Rosen unseated Republican former Sen. Dean Heller in 2018.

Brown is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and finished as the runner-up in the 2022 Republican primary for the Senate race.

Four U.S. House races will also be decided as Rep. Dina Titus, D-District 1, Rep. Mark Amodei, R-District 2, Rep. Susie Lee, D-District 3, and Rep. Steven Horsford, D-District 4, all face challenges for re-election. According to the Cook Political Report, only Lee’s race against Republican Drew Johnson, is expected to be competitive.

Statewide ballot measures in Nevada

In addition to deciding who fills various political offices, Nevada voters will weigh in on several ballot measures.

Among them is a constitutional amendment to protect a woman’s right to an abortion before fetal viability — which the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists says is typically around 24 weeks.

Another measure would require Nevada residents to present photo identification when voting or verify their identity through a social security number or driver’s license when voting by mail.

Nevada voters will also decide whether to establish an open top five primary and ranked choice voting.

On Tuesday, 468 U.S. congressional seats (33 Senate seats and all 435 House seats) are up for election.

Polls close in Nevada at 7 p.m. local time for an election in which the state holds six electoral votes.

Nevada is known as a bellwether state in recent presidential elections.

In all but two elections over the past five decades, Nevada has only twice sided with the candidate who did not win the presidency (1976 and 2016).

In 2020, President Joe Biden defeated Trump in the state by 2.5 percentage points.
