(NewsNation) — Hillary Clinton believes President Joe Biden made the correct decision to step aside for Vice President Kamala Harris in the race for the White House.

All the signs pointed to Biden being former President Donald Trump’s opponent for the entirety of the 2024 election cycle before a disastrous debate performance in July saw him hurtle toward the exit.

After denying he would step down, Biden ultimately relented and said he would not run for reelection, leading to Harris’s ascension.

“Once that debate happened, he could not recover and he did the right thing,” Clinton told BBC Radio 4’s Today program Monday.

The 2016 presidential candidate also criticized Trump’s promise of mass deportation if he is reelected for a second term.

“He is going to have a military presence to achieve his goals,” Clinton said. “If you look a certain way, if you talk a certain way, you will be subject to these Draconian measures.”

As for the Democratic Party, Clinton admitted that they weren’t without flaws, even suggesting that some might support Trump because the “economy doesn’t work for them.”

“I think our problem is frankly we are not the most effective messengers,” she said of her party.

“About what we see and what we’re trying to do to address these real and legitimate concerns that people have. I recognize and accept my share of the responsibility.”

With 35 days until Election Day, The Hill’s DDHQ polling average has Harris ahead by 4.2 percentage points nationally based upon 217 polls.
